x-box kinect 3d scanning

I stopped by Kenilworth studio yesterday to pick up some supplies, and Bryan happened to be there experimenting with an X-Box Kinect and making some 3D scans. He had me stand still for just a few seconds while he waved the Kinect across in front of me. Within seconds he had an "stl" file of me on his computer (no patching the scans together or fussing with the mesh). What you see above is an un-altered stl. Also, keep in mind that this happened in real time. I know it's crude, but to be able to scan large things quickly, this is awesome! Bryan explained that he found the ReconstructMe software and is able to use it for non commercial purposes. He also explained that the Kinect uses structured light (rather than a laser like my NextEngine scanner) and reminded me of the Radiohead video below (which used structured light to capture the figures).

I've been doing some more reading on this and I think there is some exciting stuff that could be done with this.

Wow, that is extremely impressive detail! I think I may have to grab a Kinect at some time in the future and start playing with it.
