i am only a crafstman

I watched this documentary on leather workers today. The film had so many great moments and I was struck by the understanding of craft, art, function, and humanity that was articulated through the various people interviewed. There were several sections that truly resonated with me. I watched it the first time to just soak it up, but I need to watch it a second time to really be able to take the parts that resonated with me and digest them fully and give them some thought.

I feel like this video was something that I needed to see and think about lately. Teaching has been a bit of a struggle lately as I find myself seeking conversations that I don't feel like my students currently want to engage in for some reason. I struggle with getting students to place where they are ready to graduate and then they leave. I need a community of people who want to have talks about making and the importance of tools, but I think people are too busy to take the time and stop what they're doing or go visit other people in their studios. I'm guilty of this myself.

This video makes me want to seek out deeper meaning with likeminded makers and believers. Does that exist? Yes, I know it does, but it's rare to come across someone who really "gets it". I've encountered those people before, and it some ways my family is that for me, but there are the rare few who I have really connected with in this way. My introverted-ness probably is a barrier.

Well as I'm writing this, Eric called and we had a great conversation about this video and about design and making things. I guess my call for someone to talk about these deeper things was answered in the moment. So so good to talk to him as always. So grateful for his friendship.
