Well the Guzzi sprang a leak yesterday so I tore into it last night and determined the front mail oil seal was going bad. I happened to have the seal and timing gear o-ring on hand because I had a sneaking suspicion that it needed them last year and I had ordered them. I took off the front pulley cover and crank pulley so I could access the front section of the engine. Lucky for me I can do all of this with the engine in the frame. You have to love the old Guzzis for this fact alone.
Noah supervised the procedure.
I proceeded to take off the front casting that the oil seal is located in. Sure enough it was as hard as a rock as was the o-ring. I slipped the new ones in and sealed everything back up. Filled it back up with some fresh oil and cleaned up all the existing oil that had leaked out from the bad seal.
While I was at it, I tuned up the carbs and adjusted the points. I took it out for a test ride and everything seems good. It's amazing what a tune up will do....
I pulled back in the garage and cleaned up my tools. As the bike was sitting there, I noticed a little drip of oil underneath. Oh great.... now what? Upon closer inspection, I discovered oil leaking from between the transmission bell-housing and the rear of the engine. Guess what that means? Yep, rear main oil seal! Well I happen to have a new one, but I'm just not quite ready to pull the whole rear end of the bike off yet. I'll have to save that one for another day.
Such is life with an old motorcycle. Instead I could come home and watch tv all night....
