Today was our first faculty meeting of the semester. I was amazed at the email barrage after the meeting. And it begins...

I went in to work the other day and the boss commented on the fact I must not have won the big lottery prize since I showed up for work. My response was that if I continue to receive all the stupid e-mails from the college, I'm going to quit, with or without a big windfall - it's starting to look like it used to at the high school. He thought about it for a minute and then told me, "Just delete them. If they bother you, just delete them and I'll take the heat." My kind of boss!

Someday people are going to realize the actual transference of knowledge occurs between the instructor and the student in the classroom/lab. Only place. Everyone else are support personnel regardless of their position on the organizational chart. Just give the instructor what he needs to perform his duty and then get out of the way. Don't muddy the waters with a new system, or a bunch of asinine busywork. If you want to know how things are going in the classrooms, get out of the office and go look. Talk to your people, make changes as needed. Don't waste their time. If you don't want things to get done, form committees and have meetings.

If you want to create "galley slaves", keep beating that drum.

I'd take your boss or YOU for a boss any day! You just summed up my frustration. And it's usually the email senders that are not interested in teaching or what's happening in the classroom. I think the committees and meetings become a substitute for doing the real job at hand. Let me know when you start your own school and I'll come teach for you!!
