etching

We've been running some etching experiments in my introductory Metals course this semester. It's been fun to see how small we can get some of the details. The first image is a nu-gold fish that I am putting on a belt buckle that I would like to give to the guy who shot and edited the Metals video last year. It's just a sample piece that I've been working on to show my beginning students how to bring a few pieces together to make a belt buckle. The second piece was a student's copper backing plate for his belt buckle. We created a vector from his image using a neat little workflow that we've come up with using vinyl cutting software. Then we bring the svg into Rhino, to resize and set up the file so we can prepare the resist. We etch this in Ferric Chloride and it seems to work great. We need to run some more test but so far it's been on the spot.
