University School of Milwaukee student, Lilian Jochmann, was selected to be one of 27 kid reporters from Scholastic Magazine this year. Students are encouraged to seek out interesting stories to report on. Lilian wrote this article about Shea and conducted interviews with both of us at the Digital Craft Research Lab. Thanks Lilian for helping spread the word about the people using design skills and 3D printing to help others.

wisn12 interview and viola bow modification

Shea and Steve visited the DCRL yesterday for an interview with WISN12 news. It was so good to see them. Shea is getting so big; it's like watching my own kids get older by the minute. She played her viola and showed me the modification that Ranee made to her extra bow holder. It seems that she has increased wrist movement which allows her to maneuver the bow better. I need to start on a new version of the bow holder that incorporates Ranee's design.

One of the images that I took of Shea's hand was published on the cover of a recent book on 3D printing. For more on the book, here is a press release:

The book is structured to serve the needs of several types of readers interested in 3D printing. It serves as a general introduction to the subject and its application in many fields, including industry, space, medicine, housing, clothing and consumer-oriented products. Next, methods and available software for creating a 3D model and the steps needed to insure a useful printed object are reviewed. The considerations involved in deciding whether or not to purchase a 3D printer or make use of an ever-growing number of printing services is included. The book concludes with an exercise which walks you through the characteristics of an available software package and the steps required to design a practical object. ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Victoria E. Zukas, Consultant, received her bachelor’s degree in Interactive Media and Game Development from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. She completed he Master of Professional Studies in Digital Media at Northeaster University. She currently works as a Freelance Graphic Designer on a number of projects. Her background is mainly focused on creating 3D models for video games. Her published game, BLASTiators, can be found on the Google Play Store.

Jonas A. Zukas, President, received his bachelor’s degree in Physics from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, his Master of Applied Science degree from the University of Delaware and his doctorate in engineering mechanics from the University of Arizona. He is widely known for his work in numerical modeling of the behavior of structures and materials at high rates of strain. He has co-authored and edited a number of books and conference proceedings and is the author of the monograph  Introduction to Hydrocodes  published by Elsevier. He is co-developer of the ZeuS code for the analysis of impact phenomena and was a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a Senior Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a member of the American Academy of Mechanics.

surf student hand work

Kaivahn and Calvin worked on making a number of hands yesterday.They scanned a thermoplastic form of a trumpet to create a adaptable piece that will help Karuna hold on to his trumpet. They filed and reprinted some parts for the hands we are currently building for Evan and Shea. Kaivahn worked on fitting the parts for Weston's hand. We should be able to finish up these hands within the week.

shea: new york times

Shea was in the New York Times last week. Shea has become one of the poster children for e-NABLE since she was fitted for the hands that we made her last year. Her story is helping to spread the word for certain. I had several colleagues at school who sent the article to me this past week; very nice of them to notice.

Shea showed us all, how it's done! I'm so jealous to see how she is learning to play. I need to learn something like this. It's super cool to watch her play.

viola bow angle

Ranee, Shea, and Myla came past the DCRL yesterday so that Mary and Chris could shoot some footage for the UWM Research Report videos. I was really happy that Shea brought her viola with her so I could see the viola bow holder while she played. I was also able to get some shots of how Ranee has the bow angled in the holder. This will be good as I start to make some adjustments to the CAD files.
