saw mill

 


Well this video encompasses my dream of owning a sawmill someday. This would be a ton of work to maintain due to the steam engines, but it sure is cool. It's the stuff of my childhood dreams in terms of wheels and mechanical things. It's pretty phenomenal! I can imagine a sawmill in my front yard...

hot pipe bender



I made a post about Vincent Edwards a few weeks ago. You might remember that Vincent makes furniture from bent wood pieces. I had inquired with Vincent about his wood bending technique and he sent the images above and the text below.


Here's the hot-pipe setup I used to make the coffee table. For heat, you want water dropped on the pipe to ball and roll quickly off and not just explode in steam. 

Start with 1/4" thick air-dried white oak and don't forget to soak overnight first. 

It’s basically just a 8in length of 1/4” wall steel pipe with angle brackets welded on so you can bolt it to a board with a hole in it and leave some space.

I use a propane torch supported by a wooden-jawed clamp for heat. 

The really important thing is that you need air-dried lumber. Wood bending involves softening the lignum in the wood (essentially connective tissue between the tubes that make up grain structure)


In kiln dried lumber, the cells harden and collapse, and can’t be softened again with heat and steam. 

2nd, I soak the wood overnight (I use a plastic length of gutter for this) so it’s really saturated with water. The heat creates steam inside the wood that softens the lignum to allow it to bend.

When you hold the wood on the pipe, it will feel stiff and resist bending for about 5-10 seconds, then soften. Once this happens, you have a little time to shape it before you cook all the moisture out. 

You can spray or re-soak if you need to adjust a bend further. 

This method works best with thin wood- 1/4inch or less- and some species are better than others. White Oak, Ash, and Hickory are among the best.

vincent edwards









Today, I met Vincent Edwards. Vincent was invited to be in an exhibition that Nicole Jacquard and I curated. Vincent drove up to Milwaukee from Indiana University (where he works) to deliver his work this morning. I really enjoyed speaking with him. His background is Furniture Design but it appears that he and I have quite a bit in common. I really enjoyed our conversation about Digital Fabrication and teaching. I think we'll both be hearing from each other in the future. It's so good to meet people like Edward; I just need to find a way to work with people like this on a daily basis. Hopefully the new job will overflow with people like Vincent!

porsche 356/123d make















I've been playing with Autodesk's 123D Make. I drew this Porsche 356 and then sliced it in 123D Make. I'm going to be making some new work this summer that uses this program to make a wood buck to check the fitment of aluminum sheetmetal panels that I weld together to make the final shape of my sheetmetal object. I had introduced my students to this free program this past semester, but hadn't had a lot of time to play with it myself. You can see above that the software allows you to take any obj/stl file and slice it into interlocking, stacked, or radial planer forms. You can spec out your material thickness and also tell it what size your sheet goods will be that you will cut the planer sections from. In this case my sheets were 16" x 12" for cutting on our laser cutter, but you could make it whatever you want. You can decide on how many planer sections you want in the x and y and you can move those planes around if you want more density in a certain area of the form. It generates a nested layout of all of the planer sections that you can export as a vector based pdf, eps or dxf. You can also save the assembled planer sections as an stl if you want to import this into another modeling program to pull curves from or edit. This is a great way to fabricate a quick 3d model of something and I think it is going to work great for making full scale wooden forming bucks for metal shaping. Combine this with a large CNC router, CNC plasma cutter, or waterjet and you could make some large forms.
