I finally hooked the Bridgeport up to the vfd (temporarily). I don't know why I didn't do this sooner? It works like a charm and I'm glad to have the original 3 phase motor back on the mill, rather than the variable speed dc motor. I can't believe how sensitive the variable speed on the vfd is and the range that it has. I didn't mess with any of the other programable settings, but am looking forward to that. First, I'm going to build an inclosure for the vfd to keep the chips away and to keep it cool, but I know that I will be going this route in the future with some of my other 3 phase tools.

The VFD ('borrowed' from work for oh, a good 6 years now) I run on my Tree has been absolutely fantastic. I've never even messed with the speed control (as the Tree has an infinitely variable head based on a variable pulley systems). The ease-of-use is marvelous compared to the big rotary phase converter system (which doesn't even provide proper 120 degree 3-phase power, but rather 180-90-90 degree power). Despite warnings from our EE at work that VFDs are very sensitive beasts when it comes to sudden power outages, lightning strikes, power braking, etc., this one has soldiered on like a true champion.
I should have taken closer note of the converter that Sector67 had in their shop... Man, was that ever a nice place!
