designer

This is an interesting series of videos about Marc Newson. I usually don't like to jump on the "designer" bandwagon; as I always find designer-speak to be a bit annoying (much in the same way as art-speak). But I like that he talks about making with his hands and knowing about how things work. The first part has a great segment on panel beaters and in the second part he talks about his background in jewelry. His comments on not being happy with the way objects are designed is interesting. I think most designers would mean this from a certain "designers" point of view, but I have the feeling that there is something different about the way he speaks about this. His talk of material, craft, process, learning, and control over the design is interesting. He seems more practical and real than most designers I've listened to or read about.

Maybe the he just caught me on a good day though.....
