acid flinging spinning tops

This large 3d print is the bottom section of a spinning top. My student, Michael Erspamer, designed this and started printing it today. He had to leave before it was done so I kept an eye on it for him. This spinning top will hold etching acid that will be flung from it when it is spun. Artist, Richard John Forbes is in town for the print conference and he will be releasing some tops onto a copper etching surface. Should be interesting!

Crazy idea - I love it! What sort of etching acid is used, and will it attack the ABS plastic?

Imagine what sort of effects you could do with an anodizing mask...
