spinning part 1

I'm doing a spinning demo tomorrow in Industrial Processes, so I figured I had better "freshen up the skills" today in the studio. I say "freshen" jokingly because I have actually only done this once when I was a young undergrad in an early Metals course. I think I spun a shallow dish that would have only been suitable for an ash tray and it had all the character and form as one as well.

I decided to make a spinning tool from one of Noah's old baseball batts (don't tell him-lucky for me he can't read yet) and a piece of 3/4 inch round steel and then I turned a chuck out of some scrap wood I had lying around. I cut out a disc of aluminum, trued it up and went to town. My first attempt was a little short of stellar. I thinned the metal and ripped the flange off as I was making a push. Stay tuned for part 2.

What RPM do you run at for metal spinning? Or is it a case of "eh, it's aluminum, so crank the speed all the way up!"

I'm spinning this on the fastest setting on my SB 9 inch. I would recommend 300-500 rpm for the novice spinner regardless of metal.
